BISSELL PET FOUNDATION TRAVELS SOUTH TO TRANSPORT PETS FROM OVERCROWDED SHELTER IN LOUISIANA.

OPELOUSAS, La. - BISSELL Pet Foundation collaborated with Animal Rescue Corps and other trusted shelter partners to respond to a chronic overcrowding issue at St. Landry Parish Animal Care and Control. This rural, low-income animal shelter in Louisiana is in constant need of extra support to transport pets north for a better chance at adoption.

60 miles west of Baton Rouge, St. Landry Parish has over 300 animals in its care — including cats, dogs, horses and other small critters. With outdoor kennels and temperatures still pushing 90 degrees in Opelousas, Stacy McNight, Director of St. Landry Parish, does the best she can.

“We live in an area where pet owners don’t spay and neuter their animals,” said McNight. “People are constantly dropping off pets they can no longer care for.”

On Thursday, Michigan-based shelter partners of BPF identified dozens of dogs to receive the necessary vaccines, medical tests and microchipping to make the voyage to “Station #1” at ARC’s holding facility outside of Nashville.

“We knew the trip from Louisiana to Tennessee was nearly a ten-hour commute,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We didn’t want to jeopardize the comfort level of the pets during this transport, so we’re grateful our friends at ARC allowed these pets to spend the next 10 days decompressing while health certifications received clearance.”

Once this 10-day hold is completed, the same Michigan shelters partners will travel to Tennessee to give these pets their freedom ride to the Midwest where they can eventually find permanent homes.

“BISSELL Pet Foundation has put together a strong team of trusted shelter partners in Michigan to make a difference for the pets in St. Landry Parish,” said Bissell. “We hope this pilot program will be the first of many collaborative rescue missions where BPF can help communities that lack resources.”

The group of BPF’s shelter partners who will act on the receiving end of this transport include:
Detroit Dog Rescue, Harbor Humane Society, Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue, Humane Society of West Michigan, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, Muskegon Humane Society, and the SPCA of Southwest Michigan.

BPF is also responsible for the Empty the Shelters adoption events that take place across the country. Earlier this week, the foundation announced its next national event for October 12th in hopes that kennel space is freed for the animals from this transport.
